Egypt phone registration: local SIM vs travel eSIM
Egypt's device/IMEI rules mainly affect travelers who buy a local Egyptian SIM/eSIM. Roamlinx travel eSIMs work via roaming profiles and typically do not require local registration.
If you plan to buy a local Egyptian SIM/eSIM:
- Expect passport checks at kiosks/counters.
- Device/IMEI registration or fees can apply after inserting a local SIM.
- Rules can change; verify at point of sale.
Local SIM vs travel eSIM
| Item | Local Egyptian SIM/eSIM | Roamlinx travel eSIM (roaming) |
|---|---|---|
| Registration | May trigger device/IMEI registration; passport scan required. | No local Egypt registration required; works as roaming profile. |
| Where to buy | Airport kiosks / operator shops in Egypt. | Purchase online; QR delivered instantly. |
| Use case | Need local voice number / long stay. | Data-first travel: Cairo, Red Sea, Nile cruise. |
| Risk of blocking | Possible if IMEI not registered after grace period. | Not subject to local IMEI process for tourists using roaming eSIM. |
Do Roamlinx travel eSIMs require registration?
Typically no. Our Egypt profiles operate as roaming eSIMs on partner networks, so the local SIM/IMEI registration rules do not apply. If Egypt changes enforcement, we will update guidance.
If you insert a local SIM later, that SIM may trigger IMEI/device registration and passport checks - this is separate from your Roamlinx eSIM.
When registration may be required
- Buying a local Egyptian SIM/eSIM at airport kiosks or operator stores (passport scan expected).
- Long-term device use on local networks can trigger IMEI/tax registration after a grace period.
- Rules and fees can change - ask the vendor before purchase.
How to avoid issues
- Use a travel eSIM (Roamlinx) to stay on roaming profiles and skip local registration.
- If you need a local SIM, keep passport handy and confirm any IMEI/device fee.
- Avoid swapping to local SIMs if you are concerned about device registration.
When we might ask for identity verification
In rare fraud-prevention cases, we may request a basic ID check to comply with payment/provider policies. This is not an Egypt government registration and is handled under our privacy policy.
- Data minimization: only what is necessary for verification.
- Limited retention per policy; deleted after verification is complete.
